Fenmarc’s environmental policy is an extension of our respect for the individual and our goal of profit with integrity. We are proactively trying to heighten our awareness in this area, working towards Environmental Management System ISO 14001 accreditation. Meanwhile, we’ve been active in several sustainability initiatives:

• Awarded the Gold Recycling Award by the National Recycling Starts Scheme at our potato packaging facility. Through this project, we reduced our waste to landfill by 93% and are now recycling between 90-100% of waste. The scheme will be expanded to our other sites soon.
• The water recycling facility at our root vegetable site is self-regenerating, with up to 25,000 litres per hour of clean water – water we don’t have to draw from municipal supplies.
• Our powerful Pesticide Management System promotes responsible pesticide use and minimises impact on the environment.
• We have re-evaluated our internal haulage structure. This exercise saved us 35,000 road miles a year on internal haulage alone, together with 4,500 gallons of fuel.
• Sister company Local Generation has obtained planning permission to build an Anaerobic Digestion behind our potato processing plant. The plant will process our food waste and waste from local manufacturers, diverting it from landfill. It will also generate recycled water, a natural soil conditioner, heat and green energy for the National Grid.
• We’ve reduced plastic packaging at our sites by an overall 72 tonnes a year, (9% annually).
